What it was
A pair of substantial tubular hoops in 18K yellow gold with hinged posts, marked 750 with an Italian import stamp. No designer signature. Excellent condition.
How we evaluated it
The 750 mark was confirmed with an XRF reading, and the earrings were weighed. We checked for a maker’s mark that might have made them worth more as a signed piece — none. We also checked that the hoops were solid rather than hollow-formed; they were solid, which matters for weight and for resale.
How it was priced
Unsigned gold earrings are normally priced as metal. These were in wearable condition and of a classic design, so they were priced as metal with a small premium as a finished piece, which came to a little above pure scrap value.
What this means for other sellers
Most unsigned gold jewelry sells for its gold content; that is simply the market. The exceptions are pieces worth more as jewelry — signed designer items, antiques, and pieces with fine stones — and a good buyer will tell you which category yours is in rather than quietly melting a piece that had more value intact.
