What it was
A contemporary halo ring in platinum: an oval pink sapphire of roughly a carat and a half surrounded by a single row of round brilliant diamonds, on a diamond-set shank. The style is one of the most common we see in Atlanta — a popular engagement-ring alternative from the 2010s.
How we evaluated it
The sapphire was examined first. Color was a strong, slightly purplish pink of medium tone with good saturation — well above commercial grade. Magnification showed inclusion patterns consistent with heat treatment, which is standard for pink sapphire and was priced accordingly; an unheated stone of this color would have been sent for a laboratory report first. Weight was estimated from measurements since the stone was mounted.
The halo and shank diamonds were graded as a group under magnification: bright, well-matched melee in the G–H color and VS clarity range, about 0.60 carat total. The platinum was confirmed with an XRF reading and weighed net of stones.
How it was priced
The ring was priced three ways: as a finished piece against comparable resale listings; as components (sapphire, diamonds, platinum); and as scrap. The finished-piece value was highest because the sapphire’s color made the ring desirable as-is, and that is what we paid.
Why sellers of similar rings should know this
Pink sapphire prices depend almost entirely on color saturation and treatment. Two rings that look alike at arm’s length can differ several times over in value. A buyer who prices only the diamonds and metal will miss most of the value in a ring like this one.
